Oh Papi!

Who was I kidding, thinking that the Red Sox would stay clear of the steroids mess? Today the news broke that David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez both failed drug tests in 2003. Manny, of course, just served 50 games for taking a female fertility drug but I still hoped that it was just a Dodger problem… Looks like that’s not the case. The Sox’ run to the World Series in 2004 was one of the most thrilling sports adventures of my life and it will forever remain so, even under clouds of allegations. Falling asleep during Game 4 of the Sox-Yanks series, ready to give up on the season when Papi hit his game winner in the 12th, ultimately initiating the greatest comeback on playoff history, was still pure magic. I believe the truth needs to come out and we need to recognize the steroid era for what it was, but let’s move on. The game is too great to be ruined by failed tests. Look back and you can see I said the same thing when A-Rod was outed before the season, though I may have used some stronger words for describing his character… I don’t believe that it’s possible to purge records and clean the league retroactively so the only possible recourse is truth and reconcilliation. Let’s put it all out in the open and acknowledge that some of our heroes may have doing some things that we would rather not know about. Now we know and need to forgive.
