Weekend Update

I love my job. Teaching music to kids all day is awesome and my workweek is Monday - Friday with siestas most days. It is very satisfying work, but while I love doing it, I l also love not doing it. The weekend is so crucial and this weekend was MLK Day so the time was increased by 50%. I took advantage. Friday night was a final blow out at Monkeytown. I will always remember that space as the site of special times and will miss VJing and being inside the giant video projection box. I can only hope to…

Wes Welker’s Song

We will miss you tomorrow, Wes, and we wish you a speedy recovery. This song is for you and all your fellow gladiators. Wes Welker

Wes Welker’s knee

Sometimes sports are so disgusting they make me physically ill just from watching it. I remember watching Joe Theismann's leg shatter under Lawrence Taylor and feeling sick and scared at the violence of it. I can't even begin to imagine the pain that he must have felt and I seriously hope I am never injured that badly. I have now seen enough destroyed knees in football (and I hope it is never worse than Willis McGahee) that I have become somewhat desensitized to the awkward leg angles that can occur when caught in the path of a powerful force. But…

Goodness Becomes Sadness

I attended another amazing Vimeo offline event at Monkeytown last night and was extremely disappointed to learn that the space is closing due to "landlord issues". Without a doubt this was my favorite performance/party space in the city. It was truly unique in its four-projection surround screen setup and its affordable and delicious gastropub food. I had the pleasure of performing there many times as VJ, DJ and bandmember and will always remember it as a perfect storm of social supergoodness; it opened up so many artistic possibilities from the typical NYC venue. It seems like a successful business so…

Memphis

Rock was born from the Blues and Memphis delivered it. As our holiday party for Music Together of Park Slope, we went to see this new Broadway musical and I was definitely inspired by the voices and story on stage. It is about a culture clash divided along racial lines and the few who fought to bridge the gap. A white disc jockey is determined to bring black music to the masses and refuses to compromise his morality in the face of unrelenting hatred. He falls in love with a black woman and though his crazy antics are what bring…

Thanksgiving

I am wrapping up a nice week-long vacation for the harvest, including the feast known as Thanksgiving, which was spent at The Amazing Elias' home in Armonk, NY. Every year they offer a beautiful bounty and great in-law company, which includes their three rapidly expanding grand-families. I am fortunate to have married into such a wonderful family, which also includes my mother-in-law who recently built an amazing home in Warwick, NY at the site of our wedding, The Land. The house is beautifully designed on the vanguard of eco-friendly building and is inspiring to be inside. There is a piano…

Tranny Fun

I was de-virginized last night at my first Rocky Horror Picture Show experience and it was, as I had been warned, highly participatory. If you yourself are still a virgin, I will enlighten you: the ridiculous 1975 rock musical B-movie is augmented by a group of live actors who dress (scantily) as the actors and lip-synch the lines while yelling commentary at the screen. Audiences are encouraged to throw stuff, dance and yell at appropriate or inappropriate moments. Before the midnight show at Clearview Cinemas in Chelsea, all the virgins--as in audience members who had never seen the show before--were…

Disheartening

Maine--I love you so much, how can your love be so conditional? Yesterday's election was a crushing defeat in the the battle for civil rights and equality. While Maine had recently become one of the few states to allow gay marriage, voters rejected the law and proved that we still live in an oppressive and puritanical society. It completely baffles me how someone could be so bigoted and disrespectful of others. Why would it be so important for anyone to deny another person the same rights that they enjoy? I believe it stands to reason that there would not be…

DMV: A Visit To My Own Personal Darkness

I am embedded in the Brooklyn DMV right now and moments ago was as close to corporal combustion as I have ever been. My mission is to register a car for Alaina and I and I was also here two days ago with the same goal and was rejected for lacking her signature on one document. It was unclear that her signature was required since there was only space for one signature, but it was a mistake I can live with, costing me only a wasted hour. Intrepidly, I pushed through my frustration and got her signature this morning before…
